Fixing Your AEO Strategy Starts With One Question

Most marketing teams have a gap in their Answer Engine Optimization strategy.

They are investing in content, website schema, and improvements that make their sites easier for AI tools to read. Those efforts matter as more users consume AI-generated summaries without clicking through to a website.

But many teams have not answered the most important strategic question:

What do we want to be known for?

AEO increasingly blurs the line between brand and performance marketing. But no company can be known for everything. Optimizing dozens of topics and pages at once often creates activity without building a distinctive position.

A stronger strategy begins with focus. Pick the areas where your company can win, align your digital presence around them, and reinforce that authority through high-intent interactions.

1️⃣ Define Your Value-Defining Phrases

Start with a competitive audit. Identify two or three phrases that differentiate your value from your competitors’ value.

These phrases should reflect the problems you solve and the areas where you want buyers to recognize your expertise. Then identify two or three questions buyers are likely to ask around each phrase.

That gives you roughly eight to ten focused questions rather than a list of dozens. When measuring AEO share of voice, concentration matters. A smaller set shows whether the market is beginning to associate your brand with the value you want to own.

2️⃣ Build Digital Alignment Around Those Themes

Once you have defined the problems, phrases, and questions you want to be known for, build the digital journey around them.

Start with the most important value proposition pages. Then strengthen the supporting content and persona pages connected to those themes.

Do not begin by trying to optimize fifty pages. Prioritize the pages that explain your differentiated value, address key buyer questions, and help relevant personas understand why the issue matters. The goal is a consistent digital presence that reinforces the same expertise across your website.

3️⃣ Connect AEO to High-Intent Activities

Digital authority becomes stronger when it is reinforced through interaction with buyers and peers.

Organize webinars, executive roundtables, conference dinners or lunches, and third-party thought leadership events around the same themes in your AEO strategy.

These activities help people recognize your expertise, amplify your ideas, and connect your digital presence to real conversations. They also help build an authority network around the topics you want to own, strengthening credibility online and in the market.

AEO is critical, but success does not come from trying to rank for everything. Choose a small number of differentiated themes, build a connected digital presence around them, and reinforce them through high-intent engagement.
